What is Ecstasy?
Ecstasy or Methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA) is a synthetic, amphetamine like drug with hallucinogenic properties. It speeds up the workings of the central nervous system, altering the user’s perception of reality, making them feel uplifted, happy and relaxed. It is most commonly used at clubs and parties.

The drug is produced in illegal laboratories, and is usually mixed with other substances which can include amphetamines and Ketamine; tablets often contain a very low quantity of MDMA.

What Does it Look Like?
Ecstasy usually comes in the form of small pills, or more rarely as MDMA powder.

How is it Used?
The most common method of use is through swallowing a tablet, although MDMA can be either inhaled through the nose, or less commonly, injected.

What are the Immediate Effects?
The effect of Ecstasy usually takes anything from twenty minutes to one hour, dependant on the strength of the drug and the user’s state of mind. Immediate effects include a rise in blood pressure, feelings of confidence and happiness, exhilarated rushes, talkativeness and a strong urge to dance.

As Ecstasy is a stimulant, one side effect to the drug is the comedown and most users feel depressed, tired and anxious. Although the effect of the comedown depends upon the user, it does have a tendency to worsen with long-term use. Other effects can include an increased susceptibility to colds and flu, exhaustion and dehydration.

What are the Long-term Effects?
Ecstasy can possibly cause permanent damage to the nerve endings in the brain that are crucial for thought and memory. Other long-term effects from the drug can include depression, panic attacks, hallucinogenic flashbacks, delusions, epilepsy, liver damage, and the need to use other drugs to balance the effects of Ecstasy.

Common Street Names
Ecstasy is also commonly known as MDMA, Turbos, E, Doves, Mitsubishis, X, Adam, Bean and XTC.
