What is Cocaine?
Cocaine is the most potent stimulant of natural origin which directly affects the brain. It is derived from the coca plant which grows in the mountains of South America. In the late 80’s and 90’s it was regarded as a drug which only the rich could afford; however, cheaper prices and wider availability means that the drug has now become extremely common.
What Does it Look Like?
Cocaine is a fine powder which if uncut, is very expensive. Dealers will often mix it with other substances in order to make a larger profit. These substances can include talcum powder and bicarbonate of soda. |

How is it Used?
The most common method for using cocaine is by inhaling through the nose (snorting), whereby it is the absorbed into the bloodstream. Another less common form of use is by injecting straight into the vein.
What are the Immediate Effects?
The effects of cocaine depend upon the strength and mix of the substance. However, common effects include a feeling of euphoria and confidence, an increase in heart rate, energy and body temperature, and a loss of appetite.
What are the Long-term Effects?
Regular use of cocaine, particularly through inhaling can lead to severe nasal disorders. Regular injecting can lead to possible blood poisoning, along with the risk of developing HIV or Hepatitis through the use of shared needles.
Long-term use can also lead to a number of psychiatric disorders including schizophrenia, depression and possible psychoses.
